1. The best place to start is with family and friends. Ask who they use and why they like that vet.

2. Talk to people at local pet stores, groomers, pet-sitters, boarding kennels, etc.

3. There are a number of online resources where you can search for veterinarians in your area (see links below).

4. Don’t forget the Yellow Pages.

5. Veterinary schools can be a good source for referrals.

6. If you’re looking for a second opinion you can use all of the options above, but you can also ask your own doctor for recommendations.

7. Before committing to any veterinarian you should at least call, or preferably stop by, the office.

8. Are the staff friendly, efficient and well-informed? Are pet parents in the waiting room quick to voice their recommendations?

9. Most importantly, does this vet have experience treating your species of pet? Reptiles, birds, horses and so on often need specialized care. Don’t be afraid to ask specific questions.

10. Be sure to check on office hours. Do they fit your schedule?

11. Lastly, it’s also important to know where the closest after-hours or 24-hour emergency vet is located. If Fido or Kitty starts choking at two in the morning you’d better know where you can go for the fastest help.
